frugal friend with fabulous taste

welcome to my friend Wendy's home

Wendy and her husband live in a barn - anyway it used to be a dairy barn, before they made it into their incredible home

some of the words I would use to describe the look that my friend
has going on in her barn/home

simple     clean      fresh      calm      neutral      pure      airy      open      warm      natural

the best part is that she is super creative and everything she has done to this amazing home was done with a creative vision and

friendly budget

the second story loft has beautiful  8" wide plank floors

painted in a soft creamy white

here are some photos that were taken during the installation process

can you believe that this is inexpensive plywood?

here is what you need to have these floors for your home

4' by 8' sheets of plywood 1/4" thick - about $22.00 a piece , cut into six  8" wide lengths
(no waste)
the boards will be 8 inches wide by 8 feet long

COST
45 cents a foot

1. lightly sand boards, cover with oil base primer
2. roll on one coat of latex low luster exterior deck paint
3. install boards in a random pattern on a clean sub floor - glue down with "liquid nails" and secure by tacking in some finish nails
4. repeat using 1/8" spacers in between boards** (Wendy's husband used sticks that he cut out that looked something like a paint stirring stick.

Once the floors boards are in place and dry apply 2nd coat of deck paint
Wendy and her husband are still in the process of installing the floors - one of the little details that they are going to add at the end is tacking a few old style square floor nails into the boards to give them an authentic old barn board look

** be sure to remove spacers promptly after securing boards or glue will cause them to stick in between boards.

I will show you the end result shortly including some wonderful design inspiration photos showing Wendy's simple minimalist style.

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND!

Lori

I hope it's "shortly!"
I can hardly wait to see the rest of Wendy's home ~ it already looks heavenly. My dream is to live in a barn so I'm curious to see how they converted it.
Thanks for showing and have a wonderful weekend!

That floor looks swell and I think will only improve with age.

I always wondered how to get the painted barnboard look without buying real barnboards. Gorgeous. I wonder if food or dust gets caught between the boards.

Oh WOW, thanks so much for sharing that with us! What a fantastic idea! I have some old rubber tile upstairs in my 70 year old cape, and I've just painted it for now...but I'm thinking that faux barn board idea might be just the thing! Awesome! I can't wait to see more!

That is one beautiful floor - and so fitting for a converted barn.
I planked CDX (rougher grade than Wendy used) for my ceiling, and it went up like a dream with the help of my trusty compressor and nail gun. I just wish I had had the wit to paint them first - I wasn't certain if I wanted natural wood or paint, so when I can cope with paint dripping off my elbow I'll do it. Any time soon.

I really like those floors. What a great project to chip away at as time and money allows. But I would never be able to convince my husband to do this! Looking forward to seeing more of this home.

That is the most fantastic idea. My cottage has horrible flooring throughout and I would love to replace them with these painted plywood floors. Thanks for the great idea. Have a great memorial day weekend.

Oh.Em.Gee. I am doing this exact same thing on my ceiling in one of my rooms! I painted plywood, 4x8 sheets and chopped 'em up into 8 in. pieces so as not to waste! I LOVE IT on the floor! I didn't even think I could do that on the floor! I might have to rethink things.

If I didn't live in an apartment, I would be painting up some plywood right now! It looks great!

Friends of ours used rope between the boards (copying a very old method)It looked fabulous and meant that there were no draughts coming up.

OMGoodness, that is a dream.. a total dream house! And I absolutely ♥ all your words that describe it too! What a creative friend! I love how the french doors are next to the white-painted barn doors, that is really neat. And the shells on the beams.. darling. I'm sure I will come back to this post again & again for inspiration. And I got your e-mail.. I'm excited for the TF book.. thank you Lori.

Wow, what a gorgeous house! I crave a home filled with those descriptives... But mine IS almost a barn in all the wrong ways - hay n dirt tracked in by the two legged "animals" I stable. I won't even mention the chicken that sometimes wanders in... Even my brown wood floors n sofa can't hide it all! ;-0 When I'm an empty nester the first thing I'll do is get back to white slipcovers and serene n CLEAN colors... Ahhh, at least I can dream at your beautiful site. Thanks for sharing!
hugs,
Leslie

So gorgeous. I was wondering if you could stain the floors using the plywood instead of painting them? Do you have any idea?

Those floors truly look great!
Last year we had the wonderful chance to visit a converted barn to photography studio it was amazing and I've been dreaming about it every since. Not too many around here any more and ones that are available are missing the cool old factor.

Thank you for sharing Wendy's house with us. I am going to try the flooring tecnique in our new master bedroom that we have yet to finish. I have wanted wood flooring, but not the cost of harwood. I would do a checkerboard pattern on it.

These floors are gorgeous...and perfect for our upstairs! I've been thinking of using inexpensive pine boards up there, but this would be even cheaper. Did they rip them into lengths with a table saw? Thanks for sharing.

Fabulous! I just have to do this. I wonder if you don't leave the space between the boards if you would get a squeak? Do you know if this was considered or if it was strictly for looks? Thanks so much for sharing.
